Port Hedland Port Services

Term

2009 and ongoing

Location

Port Hedland

Capability

Odyssey supplies and operates two pilot boats and a maintenance vessel to the Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA). The pilot boats assist in facilitating all shipping in and out of the Port of Port Hedland by providing inner and outer anchorage marine pilot transfers. The maintenance vessel performs hydrographic survey and beacon maintenance work across all PPA controlled ports.

Project Overview

Odyssey commenced operations in Port Hedland in 2008, when total throughput at the port was 125 million tonnes.

By 2022, that figure had grown to 561 million tonnes, making it the largest bulk export port in the world and, over that same period, Odyssey scaled its operations accordingly, averaging over 6,000 pilot transfers a year and peaking at more than 5,000 hours of hydrographic survey.

Their difference is their quality of service – they're highly responsive and they over-deliver on their requirements.

FMG Line Boat Services

Term

2017 and ongoing

Location

Anderson Point, Port Hedland

Capability

Odyssey provides line boat and draft survey vessel services to FMG across their Anderson Point Terminal.

Project Overview

FMG load approximately 1,000 ships per year with 190 million tonnes of iron ore from the Anderson Point Terminal. Odyssey runs the ships’ mooring lines to shore for every one of these ships. We also transfer the surveyors to and around the ships multiple times checking exactly how much product is on each ship prior to departure.

They're very focused on their people – they’re great in the diversity space, proactive in traineeships (particularly for Indigenous employment).

Seacorp Marine Services

Term

2017 and ongoing

Location

Anderson Point, Port Hedland

Capability

Transfer of draft surveyors, supply of line boats and crew transfer vessels as well as warehousing services.

Project Overview

Seacorp is a trusted terminal agent to mining companies exporting iron ore and manganese from Port Hedland. Odyssey provides Seacorp with an exceptional service that is on time, every time. The manganese ships that Seacorp service can be particularly labour intensive while loading compared to other bulk products and often require our draft vessels to perform multiple passes so that the draft surveyors can accurately record the draft marks.

They’re an extremely professional service provider – we do interact with other providers, but they’re head and shoulders above the rest.

MER Solutions

Location

Port Hedland

Capability

Odyssey provided a crewed dive support and utility vessel to support MER Solutions in performing repairs to a seriously damaged iron ore carrier located offshore. The project was time critical and required a high degree of coordination, communication and cooperation with MER Solutions under ‘high stakes’ conditions.

Project Overview

A fully loaded Capesize iron ore bulk carrier departing Port Hedland suffered a steering failure and contacted the edge of the Port’s navigational channel causing substantial damage to the ship’s hull. The ship, which was taking water into two ballast tanks, was escorted to anchorage outside the Port some 20 nautical miles offshore for repairs. Using our vessel, the Amplitude, Odyssey worked with MER Solutions to facilitate access to the ship for a dive team and transported a considerable amount of products, including 60 pallets of concrete, needed to repair the ship’s hull. Following the initial repairs, which took over a month, the ship was able to safely set sail for unloading and further repairs.

They're very professional, very focused, very flexible, and very competent – they're just great partners.

Port Hedland

Capability

Odyssey performed multiple vessel transfers of medical personnel and Covid-19 positive passengers between an iron ore ship and shore.

Project Overview

Following an outbreak of Covid-19 on board an iron ore carrier anchored off Port Hedland, Odyssey worked closely with WA Health to implement a range of controls to safely transfer all the ship’s crew to shore for medical treatment and hotel quarantine, whilst ensuring zero spread of Covid-19 to third parties.

Odyssey was fantastic in understanding the task at hand but, even more importantly, understanding why, when things changed day to day, another solution needed to be employed. Once they had their answers, they took it upon themselves to design and put in place effective solutions to the problems. That’s what you look for in a true partnership.
